English language requirements for Undergraduate courses

The English Language requirements for applicants to undergraduate courses offered by the Faculty can be met in one of the following 3 ways:

  1. Study in English in an English-medium institution# as specified below:

    1. For applicants whose secondary schooling has been conducted entirely in English in an English-medium institution#, one of the following is necessary:

      1. A study score of at least 30 in units 3 & 4 in VCE English as a Second Language (ESL) or at least 25 in any other units 3 & 4 VCE English , VCE English Language or VCE Literature units or an equivalent result in an equivalent Year 12 or university foundation English subject
      2. Satisfactory completion of at least one year (full-time) of tertiary study in a university, TAFE or VET course (not an English course) or a course regarded by Monash University as equivalent
      3. Satisfactory completion of two units, one of which is English-rich, in an English-medium university
    2. For applicants whose secondary schooling was not entirely in English in an English medium institution#, the requirements are the same as for (i) and (ii) above, but these results or qualifications must have been achieved within two years prior to the commencement of the course of intended enrolment

    # An English medium institution is one where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution. Documentary evidence in the form of a letter or transcript is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken.

  2. A required result on an English Language proficiency test as specified below:

    • An overall IELTS (academic) score of at least 6.5 with at least 6.5 on Reading and Listening and at least 6.0 on Writing and Speaking;
    • A TOEFL score in one of the following categories:

      • Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 580 with a TWE of at least 4.5
      • Internet-based score of at least 90 with at least 22 on Writing and Speaking, and at least 20 on Listening and Reading.
  3. Successful completion of the Monash University English Language Bridging Program (MUELBP), at the appropriate level, or of another program approved as equivalent
