English language requirements for Graduate courses

Graduate Certificate/ Diploma without a Practicum

Applicants to graduate courses which do not include a practicum need to provide evidence of how they fulfil the minimum English language requirements in one of the three ways listed below:

  1. Satisfactory completion of study in an English medium institution# to tertiary level as specified by (i) OR (ii) below:

    1. Secondary schooling was entirely in English in an English medium institution# and satisfactory completion of at least one of the following in an English medium institution#:

      • An undergraduate degree
      • The equivalent of at least 72 Monash University credit points (3 full time semesters of study) of a university degree or Australian TAFE diploma (or equivalent)
      • At least the equivalent of 48 Monash University credit points (one year full time) of postgraduate study
    2. If secondary schooling was not conducted entirely in English in an English medium institution#, applicants need to show satisfactory completion of at least one of the following in an English medium institution#:

      • An undergraduate degree completed within five years prior to the commencement of the course of intended enrolment;
      • The equivalent of at least 72 Monash University credit points (3 full time semesters of study) of a university degree or Australian TAFE diploma (or equivalent) completed within two years prior to the commencement of the course of intended enrolment.
      • The equivalent of 48 Monash University credit points (one year full time) of postgraduate study completed within two years prior to the commencement of the course of intended enrolment

    # An English medium institution is one where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution. Documentary evidence in the form of a letter or transcript is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken.

  2. A score on an English language proficiency test meeting one of the following sets of minimum requirements:

    • An overall IELTS (academic) score of at least 6.5 with at least 6.5 on Reading and Listening and at least 6.0 on Writing and Speaking;
    • A TOEFL score in one of the following categories:
      • Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 580 with a TWE of at least 4.5
      • Internet-based score of at least 90 with at least 22 on Writing and at least 20 on Speaking, Listening and Reading.
  3. Successful completion of the Monash University English Language Bridging Program (MUELBP), at the appropriate level, or of another program approved as equivalent

Courses to which these requirements apply

  • Graduate Certificate in Higher Education
  • Graduate Certificate in Organisational Development
  • Graduate Certificate in Regional and Community Development
  • Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) when no practicum will be studied
  • Graduate Diploma in Regional and Community Development
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies) when no practicum will be studied

Graduate Certificate or Diploma Courses with a Practicum

Applicants to graduate courses with a practicum component need to provide evidence of how they fulfil the minimum English language requirements in one of the two ways listed below. Note that the Faculty reserves the right to assess oral proficiency through a separate interview

  1. At least three years of study in an English medium institution# and one of the following:

    • A pass in units 3 & 4 in any VCE English subject or what is judged by the Faculty to be an equivalent
    • Completion of all secondary schooling entirely in English in an English medium institution#
    • At least three years of further full-time tertiary study or full-time communicatively demanding work conducted in English*.
  2. A score on an English language proficiency test meeting one of the following sets of minimum requirements:

    • An overall score on the IELTS (academic) of at least 7 with a score of at least 7.0 on Speaking and Writing and at least 6.5 on Reading and Listening.
    • Internet-based TOEFL of 100 with at least 25 on Writing and Speaking scores and at least 22 on Reading and Listening. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may also be required.

# An English medium institution is one where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution. Documentary evidence in the form of a letter or transcript is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken.

* Communicatively demanding work conducted in English is defined as work where communication in oral and written forms is conducted in English at least 50% of the time, and where this English medium communication involves the ability to negotiate solutions to problems, explain processes and concepts, provide persuasive arguments, critique written information and provide constructive feedback, all at a high level.

  • Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) [IF a practicum unit is taken]
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies) [IF a practicum unit is taken]
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood)
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary)
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)
  • Single unit enrolments in EDF 4701, 4702 &/or any other practicum unit
