The web-based survey was accessed via a password-protected link on the project website to ensure that only those young people at the schools surveyed completed the questionnaire.

The questionnaire began by identifying the digital technologies located in students’ homes, establishing where they were situated, how often they were used, what activities they mediated, when they were used, and how their usage was monitored.

The questionnaire then explored computer usage at school, identifying when computers were introduced, how often they were used, where they were located, what they were used for, and how their usage was regulated. The use of other personal digital technologies at school was also explored.

The questionnaire went on to consider activities undertaken in the community – beyond school and home – to explore the extent to which digital technologies are influencing social and cultural practices, and leisure-time activities. The questionnaire concluded with the collection of demographic data which might influence the ability to engage in the use of digital technologies, in other words, issues of access and equity.
