Go Boldly into movement, environment and community at Monash

SEMINAR POSTPONED

We wish to thank those individuals who have registered their interest and support for the event. The event will be rescheduled at a more appropriate time and date early in 2010. Stay tuned!

The Movement, Environment, Community (MEC) Faculty Research Group will be presenting a 1-day showcase on their research work at the Peninsula campus of Monash University.

Overview

This day will be of interest and relevance to:

  • educators (primary and secondary) with an interest in physical education, outdoor education, health and environmental education and their applications and promotion in school, home, neighbourhood and community settings
  • leaders and managers of sport, outdoor recreation, community, youth and parks agencies or organizations
  • prospective postgraduate and higher degree by research students.

The day will be broken into two parts: the first session focussing on and outlining the current work of the MEC Faculty Research Group as it relates to physically active lifestyles and lifelong learning in sport, outdoor recreation, health and sustainability promotion.

In the second half of the day there will be focussed ‘workshops', given by researchers of the MEC Faculty Research Group, that will provide participants with new and alternative approaches that will be applicable and appropriate to their related professional practice.

The day will highlight the dynamic and interrelated research trajectory that has formed within MEC, the Peninsula research community, and to generate possible new directions (or identify gaps) that future collaborations may create.

Workshops

Stream One

Teaching for meaning in physical education (Dr Trent Brown)
Students want their lives to be meaningful and physical education has many opportunities to contribute wonderfully to such meaning-making experiences. This session will focus on theoretical concepts and practical ideas for primary and secondary teachers, where their student's subjective and intrinsic meaning can be fulfilled through the practical activities that occur in PE as part of play, games, sport.

The contribution of outdoor education to quality of life (Dr Wynn Shooter)
This workshop will consider the role that outdoor education plays in shaping values, attitudes and behaviours. This will include a review of relevant explanatory models, a look at research, and an opportunity to discuss specific techniques.

Sustaining healthy communities through physical activity (Dr Justen O'Connor)
This topic explores current programs designed to enhance physical activity in a variety of community settings. A range of socio-ecological strategies for teachers, principals and community professionals will be presented, where policy through to programme initiatives will be explored. A school-based case study will serve as an example of practice.

Stream Two

A Whole-School Approach to Promoting Healthy, Active Lifestyles: The Role of Physical Education Teachers (Dr Laura Ward)
Physical education teachers are under constant pressure to promote healthy, active lifestyles. This workshop provides an opportunity for us to share and discuss current approaches to promoting health-related physical activity within and beyond physical education. Acknowledging that a holistic approach to health and physical activity promotion is necessary, the potential of a whole-school approach will be discussed.

Voices and places: environmental projects (Dr Jane Bone and Associate Professor Phillip Payne)
This workshop will look at the purpose of environmental projects and introduce some findings from research that included successful project work. We will introduce a pedagogy of listening to young children and consider alternative ways of documenting their learning.

Creating Sustainability: Sustaining Creativity - an arts based approach to discovering the environment through movement and media. (Geraldine Burke & Rosemary Bennett)
Children and teachers are looking for meaningful ways to engage with notion of a sustainable environment. This session will workshop the ideas inherent in our current pilot research project where children explore embodiment as "urban environment detectives" using "art-starts" in and around the primary school education precinct. Participants can discuss and sample the creative multi-modal ways of knowing used in this project - digital, visual, oral, movement, and eco literacies in action. This is a practical look at ideas of Movement Environment Community.
