Language, Literacy and Social Inclusion Faculty Research Group
The members of the Language, Literacy and Social Inclusion Faculty Research Group come together around shared interests in the importance of language and literacy education as a social good and entitlement. Our key objective is to make a significant contribution to further understanding of effective language and literacy curriculum and pedagogical practices in different educational settings, often with culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and mediated by the use of information and communication technologies.
Our research draws on a rich array of theoretical resources, spanning language and literacy studies, literacy and technology studies, socio-linguistics, and cultural and media studies. Questions we are engaged in exploring include:
- What can we learn about developing socially inclusive approaches to literacy education by examining the conditions of learning which result in seriously and consistently low levels of performance in first, second and transcultural language settings?
- How are language and literacy implicated in the processes of ethnic identification, racialisation and migration as they contribute to manifestations of social and economic inequality under distinctive institutional, pedagogical and political conditions?
- What are the implications for literacy education of young people’s engagement with ICT in all the dimensions of their lives?
