Funding for current research students

Faculty Research Fund

Faculty provides a small amount of funding to offset the 'reasonable costs' associated with a student’s conduct of research in research degrees programs.

All research students can apply for funding through the Research Induction and Degrees Committee. The Chair of the Committee is authorised to grant up to $600 to applicants without prior reference to the Committee. Please note: Students may only submit one claim for under $600 in any given year.

Applications must be submitted two weeks prior to the next meeting of the Research Induction and Degrees Committee.

Application submission dates for 2009 Committee meeting dates for 2009
25 February 11 March
29 April 13 May
22 July 5 August
9 September 23 September
7 October 21 October
28 October 11 November

Please note: Retrospective applications will not be considered by the Committee. Student should apply for the funding in advance, receive the approval, purchase the items or services and then apply to get reimbursed. Faculty Research Degrees Office would advise you through out the whole process. Students should apply for funding as early in the year as possible.

One copy of the application form should be handed in to the Administrative Officer - Research Degrees Programs in Room G06, Building 6, Clayton Campus. Successful applicants are required to submit a report to the Research Committee for each project/allocation of funds. They will be informed of this expectation in the letter advising them of their successful application. Please click on the links below for the guidelines, application form and report form.

Postgraduate Travel Grants

Support from the Monash Research Initiative Fund is available to assist with the travelling expenses of doctoral and research Masters candidates. Such travelling expenses consist of airfares or other fares but not items such as visas, taxes, travel insurance, conference registration or accommodation. Administrative Officer - Research Degrees Programs can register students, free of charge, for the overseas travel insurance, which is a mandatory requirement.

Postgraduate travel grants are also available for students:

  • to undertake field trips, surveys, data collection or interviews;
  • to learn new techniques;
  • to pursue research in specialist archive collections; or
  • to utilise specialist equipment not available at Monash

This grant is administered by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS), but the Faculty also contributes to the funding. It is a condition of the grant, that successful applicants complete a report form for both the MRGS and the Faculty.

Monash University uses two preferred travel management companies, HRG (Australia) and Voyager Travel Corporation (Voyager). As the University checks the market regularly through a tender process, the preferred providers are always competitive. Consequently, postgraduate research students are encouraged to use these companies. Use of the university’s preferred Travel Management Company ensures automatic registration on the FlightLock system. The Flightlock system is a traveller monitor system that enables early warning where travellers are in areas identified by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as potentially dangerous.

Please note that the university’s Staff International Travel Procedures for Australian Campuses also apply to postgraduate research students.
