Biography

Sue Willis graduated Bachelor of Science, in mathematics, and Diploma of Education from the University of Western Australia in 1968 and 1969 respectively. Following post-graduation employment in school teaching, curriculum development and university teaching, she was awarded the David Ross Research Fellowship (1977-78) at Purdue University and was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1979 at Purdue.

Since 1978, Dr Willis has held academic posts at Purdue University, Bell State University, Murdoch University and Monash University. The most senior of these positions has been her appointments as Dean of Education at Murdoch from 1997-2000 and Dean of Education at Monash from May 2000. Her career has encompassed secondary and tertiary teaching, educational research, as well as consultancy and policy work with government agencies on secondment from her university posts

Her research activities include: mathematics curriculum; gender, social justice and education; and professional judgment and accountability. Over the past decade, her individual and collaborative research work has attracted approximately A

1m in research and development funding. As author or co-author, her work has been published in 8 books and monographs, more than 38 book chapters and refereed journal articles, 12 commissioned research reports and papers, and 35 non-refereed papers in professional journals, periodicals and conference proceedings. She has presented numerous conference and seminar papers at national and international conferences.

Maintaining a commitment to involvement with the community, Dr Willis has contributed to several editorial, journal review and research grant assessment boards.
