South Africa placement opportunity


Professionals in Monash South Africa

Are you interested in completing a three week placement in Johannesburg, under the auspices of Monash South Africa?  This unique placement opportunity offers students the chance to complete part of their placement requirements teaching in South Africa.

What’s involved?

A small number of Monash secondary education students have the opportunity to complete their practicum in one of four schools, Maragon Private School, Krugersdorp High School, The Kings School West Rand or  HeronBridge College, all located near to Monash South Africa (MSA) in Johannesburg. The three weeks of the placement will be counted toward your official number of placement days.

The placement will also include cultural tours to Soweto and the Apartheid Museum, participation in university/community-based partnership programs for under-privileged children in surrounding areas, and you will also have the chance to experience teaching and learning in a range of other schools in Johannesburg.

Who is it for?

This placement is open to Secondary pre-service teachers enrolled for Semester 2 2009 in

  • EDF4733 Professional Experience 2A and/or;
  • EDF4734/EDF4073 Professional Experience 2B

Students will be selected on the basis of the needs of the Maragon School and on their 'performance' in Semester 1 teaching rounds. 

Dates

Depart Melbourne: Thursday 3 September

Return Melbourne: Sunday 27 September.  There will be an option for students to travel independently at the conclusion of the 3 week practicum.

NB: you must have a passport that is valid for at least 8 months

Costs

The airfare will be approx. $AUS1900, with accommodation, meals in the MSA College, as well as transport in and around Johannesburg adding up to approx. $AUS1000 for the three weeks.   More precise costing will be published soon.

Students will qualify for a subsidy of at least $500 from Monash Abroad.  

Accommodation and travel in Johannesburg

In Johannesburg, you will be housed within the MSA precinct in college-style accommodation. Mini-bus transport to and from Soweto, and to and from other schools, will be included in your overall package.

An information session will be held on:

  • Tuesday 21st July, 5.30 - 6.30pm,
  • Room 250, Education Building (Bldg 6), Clayton campus.
