Maningrida teaching opportunities - Preparing for the tripManingrida home | Application details | Important dates | Preparing for the trip On this page:
Can I apply for the Cook Islands experience and the Maningrida experience in the same year?Yes, but you will only be permitted to participate in one of these experiences each year. What is covered in the cost? The cost ($2,350 per person in 2009) covers your return airfare to Darwin, shared accommodation, hire of a 4WD, and fuel for the car. The cost does not cover food, tourist indulgences and travel insurance. This is a remote community, so prices are more that you will pay in Melbourne. What if I have to pull out?Withdrawal from the Placement will incur an administration fee of $150 plus any additional expenses incurred on your behalf. How do I arrange travel insurance? There are many travel insurance options. We suggest that you shop around. STA Travel offers student rates (see STA Travel's Cheap travel insurance online web page). Please also note that many credit cards include travel insurance. Check with your card provider. What about transport? The school is in the centre of the community. We will be staying out of town about 15 kilometers. We will travel into the community each school day and back out to our accommodation after school. On the weekend we will travel as a group to various places of interest in a 4WD such as the beach, floodplains and the escarpment. What is expected of me?You will be expected to do 15 days of teaching practice including attending professional development sessions as directed. You will be expected to conduct yourself professionally and to represent the Faculty and the University. You will be expected to attend briefing and debriefing sessions, to support each other and behave in a mature and professional manner in and out of the school environment. You will be expected to conform to, and respect, the customs of the community you are becoming a part of and to travel and live with the group. There will be plenty of free time to do nothing, do tourist stuff and just enjoy yourselves, but remember you are not going to Maningrida as tourists. You will also need to apply for a permit to enter Maningrida. While on this placement you need to fulfill the requirements of this permit which is based on a respect for Indigenous Australians. What is there to do in our spare time?Walking around the community, visiting the children, trips to the beach, swimming in the creeks, trip to floodplains, visiting rock art, sleeping Can family and friends come along?Friends and family CANNOT accompany you under any circumstances. This is a Faculty of Education policy. Can I make my own travel and accommodation arrangements? As this is an official practicum, students must travel with the group and accompanying lecturers. There is also no option to have separate accommodation or a single room. Only shared accommodation is available. What services are in Maningrida?Maningrida has a school, clinic, police station, store, pool and recreation hall. There are two airplane services to Darwin each day and a barge once a week.
