Do part of your 4th year / Dip Ed teaching practicum in South Korea!!!

Who is it for?

This international practicum offers students at Monash University the opportunity to complete part of their 4th year B Ed or Grad Dip Ed teaching practicum in South Korea.

If you are undertaking a specialism in TESOL, LOTE or English Education (secondary), or if you are enrolled in B Ed (primary) and have a demonstrated interest in teaching in multicultural settings, this placement could be for you. This is a wonderful way to enrich your cultural and educational experiences.

About the Korean practicum

The Korean practicum offers a number of benefits to students who wish to do their practicum in South Korea such as:

  • Free home-stay (accommodation and meals) with Korean English language teachers in secondary schools
  • Cultural experiences with home-stay family on the weekends
  • Group tours to Korean historical sites and temples organised by the Jeollabuk-do Province Office of Education
  • Cultural exchanges with Korean secondary school students and teachers

The Korean practicum involves:

  • A three week teaching practicum in South Korea (counted towards completion of your practicum requirements
  • A maximum three hours per day supervised teaching

Dates

Arrive Korea Saturday 29 August; depart Korea Saturday 19th September 2009.

Dates of Placement: Monday 31st August – Friday 18th September 2009.

Cost

Students will need to pay return airfare costs; approx cost in 2008 was $1880. A $500 subsidy is available from Monash Abroad for local students only.

Information session

An information session will be held on:

Monday 23 March 2009, 5-6pm
Room G19, Ground floor, Building 6, Clayton campus

Come along and have many of your questions answered and meet:

  • a student who went to Korea in 2008
  • a representative from STA Travel
  • a representative from Monash Abroad
  • the Faculty of Education Academic Coordinator
  • a representative from the Professional Placements Office

How to apply?

Students interested in participating in the Korea placement opportunity will need to:

Travel and booking arrangements

STA Travel will arrange bookings and visas for student teachers who take part in the South Korea placement.  These are the dates and times to be aware of in your bookings:

  • All student teachers need to arrive at Incheon Airport in Seoul by 3.00pm on Saturday 29 August.  We will travel together as a group by coach from the Airport to Jeonju on Saturday afternoon and you will be met in Jeonju by your host family.
  • Teaching starts Monday 31 August after an official welcome at the Jeollabukdo Office of Education.  Your host will bring you to the Office and take you on afterwards to your school for your first day.
  • Please book your return flight out of Seoul-Incheon for no earlier than the afternoon of Saturday 19 September.
    On Friday 18 September there is likely to be a farewell dinner in Jeonju. 
  • On Saturday morning we will travel as a group to Incheon by bus/coach.  Coaches leave about every hour from Jeonju and take up to 4 hours to get to Seoul
