For Bachelor of Education (Primary) students like Laura Wapling and Jessica Gazzo, practicum placement is a chance to test their learning before a class of eager school children, and become familiar with the school environment. But even before they started their placement at Edithvale Primary School, they already knew the school like the back of their hands.
Both Laura and Jessica attended Edithvale Primary School in their childhood, and after finishing activities like reading a picture book to a Grade 2 class, and supervising a game of volleyball with grade fives, they reflected on the journey back to their old school.
"In the beginning I thought it would be a conflict of interest knowing that majority of the teachers that taught me are still there after I left 10 years ago. However I found it easier to fit in because I did know so many people there" said Jessica. Laura noted the subtle changes: "There's been quite a lot of building work done and classrooms switched around, but it still has the same happy vibe. There are a few new faces amongst the staff and new procedures which have changed with the times. It feels a bit strange in that so much is still the same as when I left it eight years ago."
Their education studies are one part of a double degree, with Jessica also undertaking a Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation, and Laura studying Visual Arts. So, did they ever dream of being teachers when they were children at Edithvale Primary School? "No, I wanted to be an Ironwoman" said Jessica. "But once I reached Year 10 I realised I wanted to be a teacher. And funnily enough I did my Year 10 work experience at Edithvale Primary School too!" Laura, on the other hand, fondly recalls childhood ambitions of becoming a monkey trainer!
