Michael Long Mike Long is a senior research fellow who has been with CEET full-time since 1998. He came to CEET from ACER. Mike recently completed a study with the Dusseldorp Skills forum on How Young People are Faring and is currently working on a project for DEST looking at the attrition rates of first year students at university. Previously he has completed a study on the affordability of Catholic schooling and also reviewed the implications of fees and loans for VET students. Mike has also has analysed youth participation in workplace training, completed a national survey of student finance in higher education and made analyses of the major data bases on training and employment including LSAY, AWIRS and SET. Sue North Sue North joined CEET as a full-time research fellow in 2007. Her work includes studies of equity and social inclusion in higher education and VET, the evaluation of state-wide education programs, pathways into higher education for international students, equity funding for students in schools, national mapping of teacher professional learning, and the role of digital technology in education. Chandra Shah Dr Chandra Shah is an Associate Director of CEET. He joined CEET in 1995 after completing a doctorate in econometrics from Monash University. He has written numerous reports for government departments across Australia, for the private sector and for international agencies such as the ILO. He has also published articles in refereed journals and chapters in books. His work includes supply and demand projections for VET qualifications for Australia (National VET Reform Taskforce) and Victoria (Victorian VET Inquiry); and higher education qualifications for the Victorian Government. Chandra has made comprehensive analyses of job mobility and occupational replacement needs in Australia and for many years has prepared the estimates of various types of labour turnover. Other work he has undertaken include: analyses of skilled migration, skills shortages, the supply and demand for particular skills for major resource development projects in Western Australia, analyses of the ICT, TAFE teachers and nursing workforces. Damon Anderson Damon Anderson is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education and researcher with both CWALS (Centre for Work and Learning Studies) and CEET. He has expertise in policy analysis and program evaluation. Much of Damon's current work focuses on markets in vocational education and training. He has also published widely on topics including participation and equity, new apprenticeships and user choice, youth unemployment, lifelong learning and sustainable development. Gerald Burke Gerald Burke has an adjunct appointment as a professor in the Faculty of Education. From 1994 to 2008 he was executive director of CEET. He is a member of Skills Australia, a seven-member independent body established in 2008 to provide advice to the Deputy Prime Minister on Australia’s workforce development and skill needs. He is a member of the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority which is responsible for the registration and audit of school, vocational and non-self accrediting higher education providers. From 2004 to 2007 he was chair of the Victorian Qualifications Authority and a member of the Victorian Learning and Employment Skills Commission and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Richard Cooney Richard Cooney is a research fellow at CEET and lecturer in the Department of Management, Faculty of Business and Economics, Monash University. Richard is co-convenor of the Conference on Training, Employability & Employment (CTEE) and he has considerable experience in human resource management and training especially in the motor vehicle industry. Richard's recent work has been on training in inter-firm networks, group training arrangements and training for team development in the motor vehicle industry. Contact Richard by email.
Fran Ferrier Fran Ferrier was with CEET from 1993 to 2009 and is now Adjunct Senior Research Fellow and an education consultant based in London, U.K. Fran has a keen interest in equity in education at all levels, as well as in innovation and the measurement and management of intellectual capital. At CEET she conducted and contributed to numerous projects including on social inclusion in VET and higher education, VET and emerging industries, outreach activities by universities, attrition from higher education, funding for students with disabilities in VET and schools, Indigenous students in higher education, equity funding for schools, VET and older workers, VET providers in a competitive training market, User Choice in VET, youth volunteering and the economics of Adult and Community Education. Leo Maglen Dr Leo Maglen was a founding co-director of CEET and is now engaged in international consulting. Recent work has been in Albania, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and the Philippines. Leo is an Associate of CEET. Contact Leo by email.
Phillip McKenzie Dr Phillip McKenzie is a Director of CEET and the Research Director of the Transitions and Post-School Education and Training Research program at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).
He commenced his career in education as a secondary school teacher before being awarded a fellowship for post-graduate studies in the economics of education at Monash University. His MEd thesis was on the efficiency and equity implications of recurrent education, and his PhD analysed the economics of secondary school size. He has worked on a wide variety of research projects on the costs, financing and labour market outcomes of education and training, and education policy issues. From 1984 to 1989 he was Editor of the Australian Education Review series, and in 1991-92 was Executive Officer of the Strategic Review of Research in Education. He was a member of the Prime Minister’s Youth Pathways Action Plan Taskforce in 1999 and 2000.
From 1996 to 1998, and from 2002 to 2004, he was seconded to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, where he worked on major multi-country studies concerned with the Transition from Initial Education to Working Life (1996-98) and Attracting, Developing and Retaining Effective Teachers (2002-04). Peter Noonan Peter Noonan is an Associate of CEET and of the Faculty of Education, Monash University. He undertakes consultancies on a wide range of issues in education and training. Until 2002 Peter was Director of the Department of Employment and Training in Queensland. He is former General Manager and acting CEO of the Australian National Training Authority. Peter has undertaken several projects with CEET and presents papers at the annual CEET conference. Peter has been appointed to The Higher Education Review Expert Panel which is to consider the issues and challenges facing the Australian Higher Education Sector and report later this year. Julian Teicher Professor Julian Teicher is an Associate of CEET, Director of the Graduate School of Business and Head of the Department of Management, Monash University. Paul White Paul White has an adjunct appointment as a research associate in the Faculty of Education. Paul was formerly a senior officer of the Victorian Department of Education with special responsibility for finance and strategic planning.
